Daddy's SurpriseTaking a break from making my dad's Father's Day Present to blog about the surprise we threw for him before he went to Shanghai.
Sigh! Because he was so busy in the last few days, the only day we could throw the surprise was on the very day of the planned post-exams BBQ. So it was with a heavy heart that i regretably informed the NUS peeps that i couldnt make it to the BBQ. They were really lovely, being understanding and trying to move the date around. But turns out that they are all very busy people! It was too tough trying to get a date when everyone was free that the BBQ was postponed indefinately. I'm so so sorry about that! Tried to collate all our schedules to see when we can meet up again.. but it will be after 25th June. Shall we make it 5th July (sat)? Please do let me know kies?
So after making the difficult decision, we had to plan everything quickly. We decided that we would pretend tt it would only be my family going out to try a new restaurant but when we get there, the rest of the extended family would be there, hence giving daddy a surprise! :D
Jie Jie was in charge of finding us a new restaurant to try (She's the best person to ask about where to get good food. Every food outlet she brings us to will be guranteed repeated returns!) I had to co-ordinate with the various uncles and aunties about the venue and time. My dad is very very particular about arriving at places early so i had to make sure that everyone would be there before him. Not an easy task if you ask me! On the actual day, Daddy wanted to leave
half an hour early!
I went into frantic mode as the rest of the relatives had not arrived at the restaurant! Was sending out SOS smses to all to hurry to the venue! Jie jie called to pretend that the reservation was pushed back, Christine (being the main liasion) was smsing back frantically to report who had arrived, I had to pretend to be doing make up (eliciting a "why you need to put on so much makeup? No one going to be there la!" from an impatient Daddy) ... Luckily, Audrey pretended to be finishing up her maths homework so we could stall Daddy a bit!
Even so, Daddy still managed to get us all out of the house pretty early. -_- lll
The whole way there, we were praying for red lights! lol!
Anyways! we managed to reach later than the rest so Daddy got a huge shock when he saw them there. :D His first reaction was "eh??? who is also here leh!" lol! When he entered, the cousins immediately stood up clapping and cheering for him and the whole restaurant turned to look! lol! No pictures of a surprised daddy though.. cause they were all so engrossed in cheering for him that they completely forgot to get a photo of his shocked look!
We ate at Hooked on Heads (located at Thomson). Jie Jie wanted to eat a chinese restaurant which i was vehemently against as i thought Daddy ought to eat his favourite spicy dishes. Dad's fav dish is fish head curry and yet Mum didn't want to eat at "somewhere non-air con.. hot la" so Jie jie had a pretty difficult time finding one restautant tt fit all our requirements. But being Jie jie.. she did manage to find Hooked on Heads, which met all our expectations (foodwise) and more! :D
They are famous for their Fish Head Curry

and mee siam...

But being us, we went and ordered loads more!
Here's the fish..

And some of the food.. After a while the phtographer started tucking in and photos were soon forgotten!

After eating dinner, we decided to go back to gee ku's house to cut the cake. Claryce had raved about a durian cake before and remembering how my dad loves durians, i made note of it. So this was a perfect occasion to try her recommendation!
The durian cake
Everyone LOVED it! Thanks Claryce! :D

Now, 2 days before, Christine suggested making a farewell present for my dad so i had to go thru all my family albums to find pics of my dad with the cousins (NOT an easy task, seeing how my dad is always taking pics of other people!).

The day before the celebration, christine and i met up to buy art materials (without even having a clue as to what we should make!). We settled on making a coffeetable book and then rushed back to her house to make it. By the time we reached her house, it was around 6 pm. Soon, we roped in her sisters, Pauline, Angeline and Celine to help out. Audrey had told my dad tt she was helping Angel with her work and was also present. By 7 pm, stress levels were high as we were still pondering as to how to decorate the pages. Also, we discovered that the Leong's household was seriously lacking in art supplies (no coloured paper? No glue??) We had to be very innovative when it came to decorating with whatever was available!
Thankfully, Jie jie and Dan arrived and soon Jie Jie efficiently took ahold of the operation and we started working on it.. By 8 pm,Sarah and Penny had arrived to contribute to the mass of people scrawled out all over the hall! This is what you call 'Cousins united!" lol! Typical of the Ng family.. last minute and in spite of the fact tt the younger ones had exams looming, they took time off to help out :D
We worked on it till some people fell asleep (*cough* audrey *cough*).
So the very next day, Christine (who, despite her busy schedule, did most of the touch ups the next day) had the honours of presenting our hard work. Needless to say.. my dad was super surprised and touched.

In fact, my dad was so happy with the present, he refused to let anyone carry it! Even when his hands were full, he was still balancing it with one hand! :D
Here's the present we all worked so hard on! ;D
Cover Page:

I love the Bible bit because it's such a representative of my dad "THE Godfather". It's an ongoing joke that my parents are "THE Godparents" as they are very religious and take their responsibilities as Godparents very seriously.
Pauline made the aeroplane out of aluminium foil and pages from a magazine.

I love the buttons on this page! All credits go to Christine. Jie Jie did the cutting of the photos and coloured outlines.

Credits go to Jie Jie for the layout of this page. Used an old skirt of Pauline's to make the background :D

Penny, Sarah and Pauline were entrusted with the task of making the bicycle (cause my dad loves cycling) and car (cause my dad is often the one who fetches us around). And they did it with just aluminium foil and pages from a magazine! Aren't they amazing? ;D

So all in all... Mission Surprise Godpa SUCCESS! :D :D :D
Leaving you with a snapshot i found of my dad and us when we were young. I don't know what it is that gets me. It could be the happy expressions my sis and i have on, showing clearly how we were enjoying in that very moment, or how my dad's expression and pose reminds me of how he has been tenderly loving and protecting us since young.. whatever it is, i love the simplicity in this spontaneous shot.. :D
